Cervical dystonia London specialist Dr Marie-Helene Marion is based in London.
Cervical dystonia is an adult onset dystonia, with an abnormal posture of the head, due to the involuntary pulling of neck muscles. The head can be pulled in rotation (spasmodic torticollis) , tilted on one side ( laterocollis) or pulled forward or backward ( antecollis/retrocollis). There is also more complex posture such as horizontal translation of the head ( Bali’s dancer head posture), or forward ( gooese neck)/ backward ( double chin) shift of the head.
The Botulinun toxin injections are the most efficient treatment of cervical dystonia. The treatment needs to be tailored to every individual, selecting the muscles to inject in analysing the head posture.
Specialised physiotherapy is also essential for a long term improvement.
